“I have come down from heaven” (John 6:38).
What a wild thing for anyone to say. But not Jesus, the Son of God.
He came down from heaven.
That’s the amazing story of the incarnation we read about at Christmas. The eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful Son of God came to earth. Came to us. Came to you. It’s endlessly beautiful, wonderfully comforting, and eternally significant.
Christmas is a reminder that God meets us where we are. We do not work our way to heaven. We do not make our way to God by climbing the ladder of good works. Nor do we meet Him halfway. God does not sit in heaven, waiting for us to get our act together. No, He comes down from heaven. He pursues us. He comes to our level. Even more, He becomes one of us.
So, wherever you are—stuck in sin, carrying burdens, suffering in silence, anxious, afraid, broken, weary, spiritually dry—that is where God meets you.
