God Is Holy

Holy means that something is unique, special, set apart from the rest. When we sing the famous Christmas hymn, “O Holy Night,” we sing about an utterly unique night, unlike any other—the night of our dear Savior’s birth.

In the Christmas story, the angel Gabriel announces to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). Jesus is described here as “the holy one.” Indeed, this child will be unlike any other child. For all of us are born in sin (Psalm 51:5), but He was without sin (Hebrews 4:15).

Day 11 quote graphic: God Is Holy

The holiness of God points us to our need for a Savior. As sinful people, we have no hope of reconciling ourselves to a holy God, apart from a mediator. The good news of Christmas is that God came to us and bridged that great divide. In Christ, God not only forgives us, wiping the slate clean, but He makes us holy like Jesus. The Bible says, “Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin” (1 Corinthians 1:30 NLT).

As we walk with Jesus, He transforms us and helps us live in a way that reflects His holiness. He is truly a remarkable Savior, who can take the worst of sinners and make us holy. It is no wonder that “O Holy Night” concludes on a note of praise: Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we / Let all within us praise His Holy name!

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

1 Peter 1:15–16
Prayer

Father, you called me to a life of holiness. Help me walk closely with Jesus and make me more like Him each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
