God Offers Peace

Peace on earth. Isn’t that what we all want? It’s one of the most famous lines of the beloved Christmas hymn … Hark! The herald angels sing / Glory to the newborn king / Peace on earth, and mercy mild / God and sinners reconciled.

The opening words of the famous hymn echo the words of the angels who appeared to the shepherds, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14).

Jesus Christ came so that we could have peace with God (Romans 5:1), peace with one another (Ephesians 2:14), and peace within ourselves (John 14:27).

In a world full of hostility and division, with conflict on every level from whole countries to small families … all of us long for peace. We want our relationships to be without complication, our work to be without tension, our decisions to be without doubt.

Yet, peace is not found in the lack of conflict. It’s found in the presence of Christ.

As the inevitable stressful situations arise in your life, look to Christ, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He not only gives us the peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7), but Ephesians 2:14 says, “he himself is our peace.”

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6
Prayer

Father, when I’m overwhelmed, remind me of the peace available to me in Christ. Fill me with your Spirit, and in all areas of my life, make me a peacemaker. In Jesus’ name, amen.
