God Makes the Ordinary Extraordinary

Christmas is a time of wonder. The songs we sing, the decorations we hang, the lights we admire … it all creates a sense of awe. The Christmas story does the same.

We reflect on the miraculous birth of Christ, the host of angels appearing in the sky, and the wise men traveling with gifts, guided by a star. It is a story that truly sparks wonder in our hearts.

Yet, there are seemingly ordinary elements to the Christmas story. A manger. Swaddling cloths. Humble shepherds tending their flocks, doing what they would have done any other night (Luke 2:8). That’s who God chose to receive the special announcement about the birth of Christ.

Day 20 quote graphic: God Makes the Ordinary Extraordinary

The Christmas story is a miraculous story, but it’s also a reminder that God meets us in the ordinary, everyday moments. A manger becomes the crib for the Son of God’s first night of sleep. Ordinary shepherds become the first evangelists, as “they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child” (Luke 2:17).

So, as you see your friends and family, cook, clean, sing, wrap gifts, sit, laugh and catch up with loved ones, remember … God is in these ordinary moments. Thank Him for the miraculous and the mundane. They are all gifts from a good and gracious God.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father.”

James 1:17
Prayer

Lord, thank you for being present in the miraculous and the mundane. Help me recognize your hand at work in my daily life and in the little moments. In Jesus’ name, amen.
