God Is in Control

The birth of Jesus demonstrates God’s sovereignty.

Immediately after the fall, God promised that the seed of the woman would one day come to crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15). God promised Abraham that all the nations would be blessed through him (Genesis 12:2–3). Later, God promised David that He would raise up someone who would establish His kingdom forever (2 Samuel 7:11–13). Then in Isaiah 7:14, God promised that a virgin would conceive and give birth to a son.

For thousands of years, generation after generation, God was working through history, making promises and setting the stage for the birth of Christ, who would fulfill all these promises and more. The Bible says, “but when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son” (Galatians 4:4 ESV).

Day 19 quote graphic: God Is in Control

Jesus came at just the right time. Historically, the Roman Empire had established relative peace, common languages, and roads that facilitated travel and communication. This allowed the gospel to spread rapidly throughout the known world. From the prophetic announcements to the timing of His birth, everything happened according to God’s plan. It wasn’t coincidence or luck; it was the sovereign hand of God at work.

Just as God had a plan for the birth of Jesus, He has a plan for you. The God who sovereignly brought Jesus into the world is the same God who is in control of your life. He is not surprised by the challenges or trials that come your way. When life seems out of control, remember that God is in control. You can trust Him to work all things together for your good.

“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28
Prayer

Father, when life feels out of control, or when I try to control everything, remind me that you’re on the throne. You’re in control, and I can trust you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
