God Forgives

Forgiveness is at the heart of the Christmas story.

Just before Jesus was born, we learn that John the Baptist was born (Luke 1:57–66). John’s father, Zechariah, gave this prophecy about him, “you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord. You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins” (Luke 1:76–77 NLT).

Similarly, when Simeon, a righteous man who followed God, held the baby Jesus in his arms, he said, “my eyes have seen your salvation” (Luke 2:30). He knew instantly that the promised Savior had arrived, who would fulfill God’s plan of salvation to forgive our sins and reconcile us to Him.

While central to the Christian faith, we often struggle with forgiveness—receiving it and extending it. Though He forgives us of all our sins, often guilt and shame prevent us from experiencing God’s grace for ourselves. Likewise, anger and bitterness can hold us back from forgiving others and restoring relationships.

If you struggle to receive forgiveness, remember God’s amazing grace, and be assured of His complete and total forgiveness. “He forgave us all our sins” (Colossians 2:13). If you have a hard time forgiving others, reflect on the grace He has shown you, and He will help you walk in the freedom of forgiveness.
